Jackfruit live sprouts (Artocarpus heterophyllus) – Palm Beach Farm – 1 tree sprout

Start your cultivation right with a vigorous, healthy jackfruit sprout grown from select, high-grade seed. Native to South and Southeast Asia and a member of the fig and mulberry family (Moraceae), the jackfruit tree is a monumental evergreen powerhouse that bridges heavy fruit production with lush, tropical landscaping.

The Flavor & Culinary Mastery: From Pulled Pork to Pastries

Unlike the pre-cut, vacuum-packed, or canned jackfruit found in ordinary grocery stores, growing your own unlocks an astonishing dual-nature culinary experience. Harvested green and unripe, its fibrous, meaty texture makes the ultimate plant-based pulled pork substitute, effortlessly soaking up marinades and spices. Left to ripen fully, the same tree yields sweet, golden bulbs with a rich tropical flavor often compared to a blend of banana, pineapple, and mango.

Primary uses span across multiple culinary applications:

  • Savory Main Dishes: Shred young green jackfruit for barbecue “pulled pork” sandwiches, tacos, curries, and high-heat stir-fries.
  • Fresh Eating: Pull the sweet, golden bulbs straight from the ripe fruit for an unforgettable tropical treat.
  • Smoothies & Desserts: Blend ripe bulbs into exceptionally rich, creamy smoothies, or add them to ice cream, puddings, and fruit salads.
  • Roasted & Boiled Seeds: The nutrient-dense seeds can be boiled or roasted for a snack with a flavor similar to chestnuts.
  • Baking: Grind dried seeds into flour for hearty, wholesome homemade bread.
  • Architectural Landscape Specimen: Provide an evergreen, high-impact tropical presence with a dense, beautiful canopy.

Where These Trees Will Grow and Fruit

Jackfruit is a true tropical tree that needs warm temperatures year-round and full protection from frost. Young trees can be badly damaged or killed by temperatures near freezing. In the United States, it grows and fruits in USDA zones 10b–11 and beyond, including:

  • South Florida: One of the best places in the continental US to grow jackfruit, right here at home.
  • Hawaii: Ideal year-round warmth and humidity.
  • Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, and Guam: Classic tropical growing conditions.

Internationally, jackfruit thrives throughout South and Southeast Asia, the Caribbean, Central and South America, tropical Africa, and northern Australia. Growers in cooler areas can keep a young tree in a container and bring it indoors for winter, but it is unlikely to fruit outside tropical or near-tropical climates.

When Will It Fruit?

In warm, tropical conditions, seed-grown jackfruit trees typically begin fruiting in roughly 3 to 8 years, depending on climate, care, and the individual tree. Jackfruit trees carry both male and female flowers on the same tree, so a single tree can produce fruit on its own.

Botanical Characteristics & Tree Aesthetics

Artocarpus heterophyllus grows naturally as a stately, broad-canopied evergreen tree with a commanding tropical presence.

Key features include:

  • Foliage: Large, glossy, dark green, leathery elliptic leaves that create a dense, luxurious canopy.
  • Trunk & Fruit: A sturdy, rugged trunk notable for cauliflory, producing massive, spiky fruits directly on the trunk and main branches.
  • Flowers: Small, specialized green flower spikes, both male and female, on the same tree.
  • Hardy Zones: USDA 10b–12.
  • Sun: Full sun.
  • Growth Habit: Upright and broad, with a strong structural framework that provides both an abundant future harvest and a gorgeous visual anchor.

Unmatched Versatility: From Container Statements to Monumental Trees

The architectural presence and grand scale of the jackfruit tree are among its greatest assets.

Full-Scale Production: Left to mature naturally in the ground, a jackfruit tree can reach 30 to 70+ feet, developing a sweeping, dense canopy. Established trees produce the largest tree-borne fruits in the world, commonly weighing 10 to over 50 pounds each. Jackfruit trees send down a deep taproot very quickly. If you want your sprout to mature into a fruiting tree, plant it in the ground as soon as possible after you receive it. If the taproot gets halted or damaged, the tree most likely will never fully recover.

Container & Patio Specimen: In earlier growth stages, young jackfruit trees make striking, bold tropical specimens for patios, courtyards, and sunny decks, and can be stepped up into larger pots as they grow. This lets growers in cooler areas protect the tree in winter, but container growing will materially limit growth and fruit production compared to planting in the ground.

What You’ll Receive

These tree sprouts come in two stacked one-gallon landscaping pots (see the image). Your sprout’s taproot will not be hitting the bottom of the second pot when you receive it, but it will soon.

Many sellers ship jackfruit seedlings in small cups or tiny nursery pots, where the fast-growing taproot quickly hits bottom and begins to circle, often permanently stunting the tree. Our sprouts are grown in two stacked one-gallon pots specifically to give the taproot room to run straight down, so your tree arrives ready to establish deep, healthy roots.

All Palm Beach Farm live starter plants are handled with absolute care to ensure robust vitality from day one. What you receive is a healthy, single jackfruit tree sprout, not more than a few inches tall, grown and graduated meticulously to ensure it has never been root-bound. Plant it immediately upon arrival into a larger container or the ground and watch it take off!
