Hass Avocado Seedling Tree – Grown from Hass Seed – Live Sprouts (Persea americana)
Hass Avocado Seedling Tree – Grown from Hass Seed – Live Sprouts (Persea americana) – Palm Beach Farm
Start your cultivation right with vigorous, healthy seedlings grown from the world's most beloved avocado. Native to the highlands of south-central Mexico and Central America, and a member of the laurel family (Lauraceae), the avocado is a magnificent subtropical evergreen that bridges serious fruit production and exceptional ornamental design.
Palm Beach Farm always keeps a few of these seedlings in the one-foot-tall range, and we offer them at an affordable price for growers who live where avocados thrive and fruit. Ours were planted 4 to 6 months ago and are ready for their permanent home.
Where These Trees Will Grow and Fruit
Hass-type avocados thrive in warm, mostly frost-free climates with dry summers and low humidity. In the United States, that means USDA zones 9b–11 in drier regions, including:
- Southern California: Coastal areas and inland valleys, the historic heartland of Hass production.
- Hawaii: Upland and higher-elevation areas, where Hass-type avocados are grown commercially.
- Protected desert microclimates: Warm pockets of southern Arizona, with afternoon shade, regular deep watering, and winter protection.
Internationally, Hass-type avocados flourish in Mexico, Chile, Peru, the Mediterranean (Spain, Israel), South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand. Young trees are frost-tender, so protect them whenever temperatures drop near freezing. Hass-type avocados generally do not fruit well in hot, humid climates such as Florida's.
The Flavor & Texture: Beyond Ordinary Fruit
Unlike the hard, under-ripe avocados piled up in ordinary grocery stores, which are picked early, cold-stored, and often stringy or bland, homegrown avocados offer a distinctly superior experience. Allowed to mature fully on the tree, the fruit develops a buttery, silky flesh with a rich, nutty flavor and a high natural oil content that store-bought fruit rarely matches.
Culinary Uses
- Guacamole & Salsas: The obvious favorite, and never better than with your own fruit.
- Avocado Toast & Breakfast: Sliced over sourdough, or halved and baked with an egg in the center.
- Salads & Bowls: Cubed into salads, grain bowls, and poke bowls for creamy richness.
- Sushi & Sandwiches: A classic in California rolls, burgers, and turkey club sandwiches.
- Smoothies & Desserts: Blended into smoothies, or whipped into a silky chocolate avocado mousse.
Botanical Characteristics & Plant Aesthetics
Persea americana grows naturally as a stately, broad evergreen tree with a lush, tropical character.
Key features include:
- Foliage: Large, glossy, leathery leaves in deep green that give it a dense, tropical canopy.
- Trunk & Branches: A strong, upright framework that grows into a shade-giving landscape anchor.
- Flowers: Abundant small, greenish-yellow blossoms in spring that attract bees and other pollinators.
- Hardy Zones: USDA 9b–11, in drier climates.
- Sun: Full sun.
- Soil: Loose, fast-draining soil. Avocados hate wet feet, so avoid low spots where water collects.
- Growth Habit: Left unpruned, avocados can reach 30 to 40 feet, but they can be kept smaller with regular pruning.
When Will It Fruit?
Avocado trees grown from seed typically take roughly 5 to 13 years to begin fruiting, and sometimes longer, depending on climate, care, and the individual tree. Because avocados don't grow true from seed, each seedling is genetically unique, and its fruit may differ from its Hass parent. That's part of the adventure, and some of the world's great avocado varieties began as chance seedlings, including the original Hass tree itself.
Want Guaranteed Hass Fruit Sooner?
These seedlings make outstanding rootstock. Once established, they can be grafted with Hass budwood (or any variety you love), which can produce true Hass fruit within just a few years of grafting. Many serious growers start exactly this way.
What You'll Receive
Each seedling is about one foot tall and potted in a 1-gallon trade pot. It must be repotted into a larger container or planted in the ground immediately upon receipt. If you're planting in the ground, choose a sunny, well-drained spot, water deeply, and keep the soil evenly moist (but never soggy) while it establishes. Container growing works well in the early years and lets growers in cooler areas move the tree to shelter in winter, but trees planted in the ground grow faster and produce far better over the long run.
All Palm Beach Farm live starter plants are handled with absolute care to ensure robust vitality from day one. What you receive is a healthy, single avocado seedling, grown meticulously to ensure it has never been root-bound. Plant it right away and watch it take off! Yummy in the tummy!
